Profiler is a tool that is used to customize the auditory display for individual users. Unlike visual displays, auditory displays must be customized for an individual listener when they are delivered binaurally (using headphones). This customization process involves the measurement of an individual's Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF) responses to capture the subtleties of that person's head, pinna, and upper-body characteristics. Past technologies have not remedied the fact that this measurement process is time consuming and requires expensive equipment and ideal acoustic conditions if good measurements are to be made. For most applications, this approach is simply not practical.
As a remedy, VRSonic has pioneered the use a best-fit selection process where a listener, using Profiler, is automatically guided through a process of selecting one out of over 90 measured HRTFs in our database. The selection process produces the nearest fit HRTF for a particular listener. This nearest fit approach has been scientifically validated to produce results that closely approximate natural hearing. Once the user is fitted with the customized HRTF, Profiler stores the results in a named listener profile. These profiles can be applied to the SoundScape3D listener which then makes all the necessary adjustments to optimize the display for that listener.
